Stretching on the floor with legs elevated at a 90-degree angle to alleviate back pain.

If you spend most of your day sitting—at a desk, in your car, or working from home—chances are you’ve noticed the toll it takes on your posture. You might feel your head craning forward, your shoulders rounding, or tension building in your neck and lower back. Over time, these subtle shifts can lead to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.

The good news? There’s a simple, effective solution you can do from home in just a few minutes: the Static Back exercise.

We use this corrective exercise often in personal training for the over 50+ population.

What Is the Static Back Exercise?

Static back is a restorative posture technique that helps reset your alignment by passively bringing your spine, hips, and shoulders into proper position. It’s incredibly simple:

  • Lie flat on your back

  • Rest your legs on a chair or couch at a 90-degree angle

  • Let your head, shoulders, and hips settle into the floor

That’s it. No equipment, no experience needed—just a few minutes of stillness to undo hours of sitting.

Why It Works

The Static Back exercise works by passively realigning your body without added strain. When you're in this position:

  • Your ear, shoulder, and hip naturally fall into alignment

  • Your lower back decompresses, relieving pressure on the spine

  • Your pelvis settles into a neutral position

  • Your shoulders relax back and down

  • Your neck and head return to a more neutral, supported position

This is especially valuable if you've been stuck in a rounded, hunched-forward posture for much of the day. It helps reverse those effects and gives your spine space to extend and breathe.

When to Use It

This is an ideal exercise for:

  • Work-from-home professionals who sit for long stretches

  • Office workers looking for quick relief

  • Anyone feeling tension in their neck, shoulders, or lower back

  • People with poor posture who want to gently improve alignment

Try doing it for 2–5 minutes, especially after sitting for a few hours. You can focus on your breath while lying in this position to further relax your body and enhance the effects.

What to Expect

Most people feel a noticeable sense of relief in their lower back, more openness in their shoulders, and better posture after just a few minutes. However, if you find you're not feeling better after several minutes, it’s okay to stop and try another posture technique. Everyone’s body responds differently, but for many, Static Back becomes a go-to reset tool.

Final Thoughts

Posture is something we often overlook—until it becomes a problem. The Static Back exercise offers a gentle, effective way to combat the negative effects of sitting, restore alignment, and support healthy movement. It's a simple but powerful habit that can help you feel better, move better, and age well.

Give it a try the next time your body needs a reset. And stay tuned for more exercises in our Static Back series that will help you improve joint mobility, posture, and overall health for life!
